bar SUPPORT FUND

FOR ARTISTS BASED IN LEBANON

Beirut’s once thriving art scene now runs the risk of an impending decline, following an already dire economic crisis exacerbated by the devastating explosion that took place on August 4, 2020. With limited resources available to artists, ensuring the continuity of art creation in Lebanon is a key and urgent priority for the Beirut Art Residency (BAR).

The BAR Support Fund will provide local emerging artists with small grants in order to assist their production needs. The Support Fund will first and foremost enable emerging artists, including fine art students, to cover the costs of materials and logistics associated with art production and proliferation.

FUNDRAISING PROJECTS & EXHIBITIONS

Organising virtual and physical exhibitions as well as artists-led projects with proceeds going directly to the Support Fund thanks to the efforts of our past BAR artists-in-residence and peers around the world.

edition for beirut by fiona ones

Former BAR artist-in-residence Fiona Ones created a 12 piece edition for Beirut capturing the ongoing healing of the city through the inherent power of memories.

The Measurement of Change, We Call Time consists of found papers from the 60’s that reflect the layers of the fragile yet deeply rooted Beirut. Revealing through an embossing technique the traditional old tiles one can find in the city, they carry more often than not the promise of new life being spread.

darryl westly X ANDREW ROSS

A collaborative exhibition by artists Darryl Westly and Andrew Ross that comprises of two unique drawing editions bringing together Westly’s complex and intricate outtakes of Beirut’s streets, people and culture, with Ross's innovative mechanical printing process. Each piece serves both as memento and a cornerstone to the city’s past and future.

Darryl Westly is a visual artist based in New York City and was former BAR resident. Andrew Ross is an interdisciplinary sculptor based in New York City.

FUNDRAISING EXHIBITION at void

In efforts to support the Lebanese art scene and its actors, the Beirut Art Residency organised an exhibition at Void, a non-profit contemporary art institution based in Derry, Northern Ireland.

The exhibition brought together works on paper, photographs and video works by Lebanese artists as well as former BAR artists-in-residence. Half the proceeds raised went to the BAR Support Fund.
