THE ARTIST
Fiona Ones is a versatile artist working with photography and pointillistic needle drawings on paper. Her stories are about perceiving reality and overcoming the white noise of everyday life. A collection of records and translated accounts of lived experiences. In 2015 her work got picked up by A.I Gallery in London and has since been shown in various exhibitions and fairs.
THE RESIDENCY
During Ones’ residency, she was fascinated by nature’s discrete yet abundant takeover of the city. Plants emerge from ruins and crack in the streets, inactive construction sites and abundant houses. The resilience of nature observed in the city combined with Lebanon’s historical path seen in mosaics, the traditional tile making and the preservation of Lebanon's archaeological artifacts, all contributed to inspire her work.
“The seed, as a metaphor that called to my heart. When I look and experience nature, it is continuously the process. The splitting away of the old and the beginning of a new life, that is little known but nevertheless so strong. It tells its own story about memory and time, both immortal but constantly moving. “
Ones used embossing and needle drawings on old paper she found in Beirut. Seeing the pieces under dull light, the papers appear to be blank. But once the direct light hits the paper the needlework creates a shadow and appears in their forms and shapes. The viewer is allowed to experience the dynamic rhythms that the colours of light draw onto the paper.
