THE ARTIST
Born in Mexico City, Beatriz Morales developed her experimental painting style auto-didactically. Morales pursues an investigative, neo-abstract-expressionist approach in combination with figurative and illustrative components. The artist works independently and in cooperation with galleries in Europe and North America.
THE RESIDENCY
At BAR, Beatriz presented a series of works influenced by how layers of time overlap visually on the facades of buildings and in the general cityscape of Beirut. Taking her family's history of migration as a template, she traces and visualizes the presence of memories of Lebanon as a distant country of origin, of a former self, a buried identity. Beatriz’s technique involves applying multiple coats of paint and other materials on media like wood and canvas, and then subject these layers to various degrees of decay and disruption. The resulting works read like a testimony of the passage of time, in which events are constantly covered up and replaced by new scenarios and layers of being. Sometimes in history, as in her paintings, a crack opens up, and starts to reveal a deeper truth that may have been forgotten, but never ceased to be present.
